Now Unlimited is a UK based Social Enterprise servicing Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and Yorkshire with mindfulness-based solutions to improve the health, well being and performance of individuals and organisations in the education, health and social care, criminal justice and workplace settings. We have developed our Criminal Justice & Mindfulness offer in response to the Mindfulness All Party Parliamentary Group.
We know that offenders represent one of the most socially excluded groups in our society, with some of the highest levels of both physical and mental health problems. Many experience common mental health problems such as depression and anxiety that are not being adequately addressed. This is often associated with others issues such as family and relationship difficulties, peer pressure, economical disadvantage and substance misuse. Health and social characteristics among offenders also include significantly poorer physical health compared to non-offenders, poor educational attainment, a much higher incidence of suicide and self – harm.
To change the lives of offenders by providing mindfulness-based approaches that are designed to reduce re-offending and to support them in making a positive contribution to the communities in which they live.
We do this by developing and delivering criminal justice and mindfulness programmes that have been proven to be effective in directly engaging with habitual patterns of thinking and acting which led to criminal and anti-social behaviour as well as recidivism and mental health problems. This is a relatively new area of work for Now Unlimited and to date our work has focused primarily on young offenders and young people at risk. We are lucky to be able to draw upon the skills, knowledge and experience of people who have worked within youth offending teams and youth offending institutions in developing this area of work.
Our work uniquely brings together youth work principles, social and emotional development, active citizenship and mindfulness teaching in ways that are not only acceptable but also effective. Our approach to working with offenders is summarised as non-attachment to outcomes, being non-judgemental, patience and trust, warmth, friendliness and kindness.
Working with Young People at Risk
Our ten week crime diversion programme working with young people at risk is underpinned by a mindfulness-based approach to active citizenship and covers the following themes:
How the brain works and how the brain is affected by pressures and challenges
How emotions impact on bodily sensations, thoughts and behaviour
Connecting with other people –thoughts, emotions and behaviours when competing and collaborating
Identifying difficult emotions in others and empathy
Giving and receiving support – the benefits of active citizenship
How to continue to integrate the learning from the programme into daily lives
